Telephone Calls
The telephone area code for London is 020. Each landline number consists of 8 digits, most clearly expressed as 2 sets of 4 digits. For example the mainline telephone number for the Jesmond Dene Hotel is 020 7837 4654.
Dialing from Europe to the Jesmond Dene will require the full international dialing code for the UK which is 00(44). In full would be 0044 (0)20 7837 4654. You will notice the first zero in parenthesis. This is because you must leave this out when dialing from aboard. Likewise calling the UK from the USA or Canada, you would dial – (011) (44) (20) (7837 4654) – Exit prefix, UK code, London, Telephone number.
All mobile phone numbers in the UK start with the prefix “07”, again to dial from abroad you will need to remove the first zero.
The local emergency number in the UK is 999.This will connect you to the Police, Fire and Ambulance service. Leaving Tips
Do I need to tip?
In London you do not need to tip. Normally in a hotel it is quite normal to maybe leave a small tip for the room attendants. If you wish to tip the hotel staff in general this is completely up to your discretion.
Around town if you are using any taxi or minicab service it will again normally be tip free. It is customary to tip in restaurants in London. However if you go to a restaurant and see service charge included, you do not have to tip extra unless you want to. Electrical Supply
The voltage in London is 240v. Our plugs in the UK are standard 3 pin. Most shaving points are the 2 pin plugs. For items such as irons, hairdryers, kettles you will need a power convertor if you are from outside the UK. However we generally advise customers not to bring such items as we have them all readily available at reception for loan. If you have a laptop or mobile phone charger you will need these devices as most of them take a variable input from 110-240. You will just need a plug adaptor which again we can loan at the hotel.
