Camden Market

A lively marketplace in the greater London area

London’s fourth-most popular tourist attraction is this collection of marketplaces in Camden Town. More than 400,000 visitors attend each month to peruse the myriad goods available here. Most visitors arrive from London’s central districts, often hailing from conveniently-located hotels such as the Jesmond Dene Hotel.
In all, the area is composed of five separate marketplaces: Camden Stables Market, Camden Lock Market, Camden (Buck Street) Market, Camden Lock Village and Inverness Street Market. Each has its own specialty, but the collective lot is referred to simply as ‘Camden Market’.

Camden Lock Market sits alongside Regent’s Canal, where it opened in the 1970s. It began as a craft market but eventually broadened its scope to include books, accessories, second-hand clothing and a range of other products. This is the best-known Camden Market.

The Stables Market is almost as big as Camden Lock Market. It stands on the former site of a hospital for horses that pulled barges on the lock. This marketplace is best known for furniture and clothing, but offers a range of other items as well.

Camden Lock Village was formerly known as the Canal Market, but it burnt down in 2008 and reopened a year later with its new name. Nearby, the Buck Street Market focuses on apparel. The only market with an extended history is Inverness Street Market, which has been reduced over the past hundred years to a small collection of vendors selling fresh produce.

The Electric Ballroom night club is close to the tube station, and at the weekend it hosts an indoor fashion market. Most of the venues at Camden Market are open every day of the year. Sunday is the biggest market day when crowds are heaviest.

Getting to Camden Market from central London is possible by tube. Camden Town and Chalk Farm both have stations near the marketplaces. Guests of the Jesmond Dene Hotel will find the task of arranging transportation especially convenient, as the important Underground exchange, Kings Cross St. Pancras, is within easy walking distance of the hotel.
